Megan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview ignites conflict
SAT. | 03-27-21 | OPINION
Over a year ago, I wrote about my opinion on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle leaving the royal family. Initially, my opinion was that Meghan Markle should have never married into the royal family. Markle stated they left the royal family because of “excessive media attention” and I thought she was crazy to believe she would not get much paparazzi attention. After watching Meghan and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah, my opinion drastically changed.
The couples tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey aired Sunday, Mar. 7. The interview included many unfiltered examples of Harry and Meghan’s bad experience in the royal family. Truthfully, the interview did not put the royals in a good light at all. Meghan and Harry told Oprah

they had wanted to do the interview to answer any questions the public might have had and to tell their side of the story. The interview started with a one-on-one interview between Meghan and Oprah. In this portion of the interview, Meghan talks about her attempt to adjust to the royal family after her marriage to Harry and her declining mental health. Throughout Meghan’s statements, she explained how during her pregnancy with her and Harry’s son, Archie, she had suicidal thoughts. Meghan said she was finally learning what life with the royal family would be like when she realized they would not let her go out in public to keep her out of the eye of the media. This point in the interview made me feel extremely sorry for Meghan because all she did was fall in love with Harry and gain the love of the people. She never asked to be criticized everyday for her every move. Meghan also spoke out about how she had brought up her mental health issues to a senior person working for the royal family and they had basically ignored her and told her to get through it. Meghan needed help and the royal family gave her none.
The next huge point in the interview was when Meghan told Oprah about how the royal family told Harry and Meghan that Archie would become a Prince. Then suddenly, the royal family decided that baby Archie was not going to get the title and protection as prince that he deserved. Prince Harry had also mentioned that at some point, members of the royal family had discussions during Meghan’s pregnancy on how dark the baby’s skin would be when it was born. This started a whole new set of conflict involving race and why the royal family would care how dark a member of their family was. At this point, Meghan said that she and Harry felt trapped by the royal family and they really didn’t have many people to turn to. When I heard this it sounded so strange to me. This was one of the most powerful families on Earth, and it just proved that not everybody is as happy as they seem. Princess Diana had also held interviews in the past where she discussed how the royal family had put many restrictions on her as well.
This interview gained a tremendous amount of traction all over the world. Everybody wanted to know which members of the royal family were doing all these terrible things to Meghan, Harry and Archie. After the release of the interview members of the royal family, particularly Prince Charles, wanted to correct the accusations made against him. Harry mentioned that his father, Prince Charles, had stopped returning his phone calls. The family released an official statement saying "The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members." Harry did say that he still has a good relationship with the Queen, including weekly Zoom calls.
I personally see the royal family differently now. Instead of viewing them as being abandoned by Harry and Meghan, I see them as getting what they deserved. Some members of the royal family treated Harry, Meghan, and baby Archie terribly and I don’t blame Harry and Meghan for leaving and living their own lives. I recommend watching the interview on the CBS app for more information.
