After 27 years of teaching math, Beth Gallup officially retired in the spring of 2024. After retiring, Gallup believed that her math journey was over. However, when math teacher Demetria Williams took her maternity leave earlier than expected, no teacher was left to educate her students. The school knew that assistance was needed, so they turned to Gallup.

“Knowing that there was a need and knowing that there was help needed, and I love to be the help,” Gallup said.

Gallup is back for half of Williams’ maternity leave and possibly the beginning of the second semester if Williams is not back in time.

Having taught at South Central High School, Wellcome Middle School, AG Cox Middle School and finally, Rose for 12 years, Gallup has worked to perfect her teaching skills to ensure that her students are well-educated as well as prepared for the next level of math.

“I hope to create more consistency within the classroom and to help build confidence in the kids because they can feel better about what they are learning,” Gallup said.

When Williams left, it was difficult for the students because they had to learn to deal with a variety of substitutes and their teaching styles as well as the constant teacher changes.

“It impacts us because we are having multiple teachers at once and sometimes it is hard to understand the concept when three different teachers are trying to help us understand it,” sophomore Henry Aldridge said.

Even though it is a challenge each school day, having a different teacher with a new attitude has helped the students become motivated to work hard with their other tactics.

“Our classes have a better understanding of what to do, and she has really helped us get caught up with anything we have been confused about,” Aldridge said.

Gallup’s return has allowed her to reconnect with her passion for teaching math while keeping this as a side job, fulfilling her desires. Her coming back has been met with enthusiasm and appreciation from both faculty and students.

“I think it’s really cool to see her come back and give up her time knowing she is a retired teacher and probably wasn’t planning on coming to teach Math 2 again at Rose,” Aldridge said.

With Gallup’s passionate and experienced teaching, the class benefits by having someone with math credentials and they are able to continue through the curriculum.

“I think that it is always hard to learn math from a sub [substitute] so I hope that by being a recent math teacher here that my current level of curriculum knowledge is hopefully helping,” Gallup said.

Students have been struggling with unawareness as to who will be in the classroom each day as well as learning from different styles and it could lead to complex situations.

“The environment is definitely different because I think there are two different styles of teaching, where Mrs. Williams would just write the notes on the board and then give us Delta Math, and Mrs. Gallup has given more of her time to help us understand it,” Aldridge said.

In conclusion, the departure of Williams has allowed the students to begin a new journey. Gallup’s experience and knowledge have majorly helped the education of the students.

“I chose Rose at first because of the part-time possibility, [but] I stayed at Rose because of the people,” Gallup said. “I loved who I worked with and who I worked for; the friendships and support made it worth the ride.”
