Five Nights franchise releases another hit
MON. | 02-21-22 | ENTERTAINMENT
The eighth installment of the popular franchise Five Nights at Freddy's (FNAF), was released on Dec. 16, 2021. The new game is titled Security Breach and has taken the internet by storm with gameplay and characters never before seen.
For one who is new to this game, the overall premise is trying to survive the night, 12 a.m. to 6 a.m., while animatronics try to hunt and kill the player. Depending on the game, the player is either a security guard, or in Security Breach, a young boy. The animatronics vary from game to game since characters are added, modified, or taken out completely. Each game ends once the player survives five nights and in some cases six or seven. As the FNAF series continues to progress, new locations, storylines and styles of gameplay are developed.
The story of Security Breach centers around a young boy named Gregory who is trapped overnight in the Freddy Fazbear's Mega PizzaPlex. Players find themselves in Gregory’s shoes and must escape the killer animatronics and survive until 6 a.m. when the PizzaPlex reopens. The main attraction in the PizzaPlex is the Main Stage Band consisting of Glamrock Freddy, Glamrock Chica, Roxanne Wolf and Montgomery Gator. Before the game begins, a cutscene shows Freddy collapsing during a show due to a programming malfunction,

and when the game begins, the player is Gregory who hid inside Freddy’s chest cavity to evade being taken by the PizzaPlex’s security guard. A new concept introduced within this game is Freddy being an ally to Gregory and trying to help him escape, rather than following his normal bloodthirsty animatronic behavior.
Throughout the night, new characters are introduced as Gregory continues to complete his quest to escape. Because the game is full of different ways the player could complete the quest, there are several endings which makes Security Breach so unique and refreshing compared to the previous games.
Even though Security Breach is packed full of new surprises, characters and lore, many fans questioned if the creators meant to release the game so soon. Many players have noticed glitches and bugs that have been a recurring problem. Although these malfunctions are annoying, many people, including myself, overlook them because of the excitement of playing the game. There were also rumors that Security Breach was an unfinished game. Supposedly there was a previous trailer released in February of 2021 that does not relate at all to the current game. Many fans speculate that the game is not finished yet and there is still more to be uncovered.
Due to Security Breach only being available for play on PC, PS4 and PSA5, I myself have not gotten a chance to play it. Instead, I watched all of Markiplier’s (Mark Fischbach) streams on YouTube. I have been watching Fischbach play FNAF ever since the first game, and Security Breach is definitely quite different. I really enjoy the new dynamics within the game, because the free roam capabilities give the player a lot more freedom to explore and find hidden secrets. However, one thing I would have wished to see more of is the fear factor. Previous FNAF games have always had moments full of anxiety and fear as the office’s power slowly leaks away and ends with a brillant jumpscare from one of the animatronics. Because the Mega PizzaPlex is such an expansive location, the jumpscares are limited. Despite this, creators are sure to include some traditional FNAF play of watching the cameras and doors inside one of the security offices which revives some of the past horror spirit. In new installments, players can only expect gameplay and concepts to change, and I think Security Breach represents that well. I believe that Security Breach has been a good way to introduce new game concepts and mix them with the old game concepts of FNAF. Also, Security Breach continues on with the storyline and introduces new mysteries to solve which leaves players wanting more.
Overall, the fans and myself are enjoying Security Breach as the canon [true] ending opens up new suspicions, confirmed theories and more questions which can only be answered by another game.
