Editor reviews murder mystery sequel

TUES.| 2-7-23 | ENTERTAINMENT

On Nov. 23, 2022, the mysterious new movie “Glass Onion” was released into theaters across the country. However, it was unprecedented in that it stayed in the theaters for only a week before being removed and hidden until a month later, when it was released on Netflix.

“Glass Onion” is a sequel to the film “Knives Out”, released in 2019.            However, sequel is a very loose term to describe this film. All of the characters are completely new and different from the first movie except for the detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, so it is unlike any normal sequel. This movie brought twists and turns and so much entertainment for me, and I recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting new movie.

The movie follows the adventures of a group of six people, along with a

few side characters, who were a close friend group, but had since gone to live their own lives with little contact. However, they were all reunited by the arrival of a mysterious large wooden box which, after a sequence of complicated puzzles, unlocked to reveal an invitation from Miles Bron. Miles is a member of the friend group who is a multi-billionaire and owner of a technology company called Alpha. His invitation brought all of the members of the friend group: Andi, Lionel, Claire, Birdie and Duke to his personal private island. However, there was also a box mysteriously sent to Detective Blanc. They all arrive on the island and are in awe of its beauty, but are all slightly unnerved and do not trust Miles and his antics. Andi’s character is also very sullen and mysterious, and her character is developed greatly as the film continues. It is shown to the viewers early on that all of the characters have motives to kill Miles or keep him alive for his billionaire fortune, so the viewer is constantly thrown through loops and never knows who to trust.

This movie is so unique and unlike any other I have seen. It has the perfect mix of drama, comedy, mystery and plot twists. It is just something else and there’s almost no way to do it justice in describing it without watching it for yourself.

Another aspect of this movie that was amazing is the cinematography and just the display of it all. It features a lot of shots that seem normal at first, but when they are looked back upon later in the movie, secret details are revealed in the way the shot was framed and in different perspectives that drive the story forward. This movie also featured beautifully bright colors that are usually not seen in a murder mystery style of movie. It can be even unnerving at points when there are jokes and bright colors in places where there would normally be darkness and gloom.

As the movie’s plot progresses, the viewers learn more about the characters and the dark backgrounds that follow them. It gets to a point where it is hard to find a redeeming quality in any of the main characters. The only character that the viewers can count on and enjoy is Detective Blanc, and even he throws the audience through loops. The amount of plot twists are countless and, although you may think that would make the movie messy and hard to follow, the twists are all perfectly calculated and incorporated into the film in a way that is marvelous to watch.

Watching this movie just feels like a treat, especially for me, being one of the few who saw it in theaters during its week-long premier. The plot, the camera work, the characters, the plot twists, everything in this film is fascinating to watch and I recommend “Glass Onion” to anyone who is on the hunt for a wild new movie.
